The wide range of data from the French Ifremer/REMORA network, collected since 1993 allow a global characterization of mortalities of 1-year old and 2-years old cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas, that are cultivated in the main French oyster areas (Fleury et al, 2003), and thus a better understanding of the causes of these mortalities (Ifremer /MOREST project). The average annual mortalities on intertidal sites range from 10 to 20%. Most of the mortalities take place in Spring and Summer. 1-year oyster mortalities occur in Marennes and several sites in Brittany whilst 2-years oyster mortalities occur in the same sites and in baie des Veys (Normandy). In addition, 2-years oyster mortalities appear more variable according to different annual surveys.... |

The necessity to combat oil slicks makes it necessary to assess the relative effectiveness and toxicity of dispersal agents used. This is usually done by using individual or groups of indicator organisms. The theory behind the various approaches is outlined, and some considerations are listed for the choice of technique. 2 organisms were chosen - the Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea), and the phytoplankton alga Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin, on which if feeds - and the oyster closing reaction, and level of inhibition of growth under the influence of irritant products was measured. Methods are described, and the results shown for emulsifying, agglomerating and precipitating products. The results are discussed, and the mode of interference of the products... |

The alkaline comet assay was tested on different microalgae: the clinofiagellates, Karenia mikimotoi and Alexandrium minuturn, and the diatom, Chaetoceros gracilis. The microalgae were exposed during their exponential growth to the model direct genotoxicant, hydrogen peroxide (1 h, 5 and 100 pM H2O2). Following H2O2 exposure, the comet assay was validated only for K. mikimotoi for which genotoxicity was observed from the lowest tested concentration of 5 pM with a concentration-dependent effect. C. gracilis was too small in size (4 mu m) to be correctly analysed. For A. minuturn, our lysis buffer was not strong enough to digest the cellulosic thecal plates. For K. mikimotoi, the comet assay was thus applied for the study of the genotoxic effects of... |

Numerous studies have compared the rates of primary production using various techniques at specific locations and times. However, these comparisons are local and cannot be used to compare or scale rates of primary production using different methods across ocean basins or seasonal time scales. Here, we quantify the range in rates of primary production derived using different techniques and provide equations that allow conversions of estimates between different methods. We do so on the basis of a compilation of data on volumetric estimates of primary production rates concurrently estimated with at least two different methods. We observed that the comparison of estimates of marine phytoplankton primary production derived from different methods reveals very... |

This work includes the composition and distribution of phytoplankton in the coastal region. For this purpose were established 23 stations on three regions and six sections divided from the northern region of Esmeraldas to the south of Puerto Bolívar, this work was carried out at the Research Vessel Orión in december 2008. The greater diversity of the phytoplankton community in the surface layer was observed in the Central Region, Specifically in section 4 with a total of 84 species, highlighting the dominant species of diatoms as Rhizosolenia stolterfothii, Thalasssiosira subtilis, R. imbricata, Proboscia alata, Chaetoceros affinis, and in the group there were abundant dinoflagellates Gonyaulax poledra and Goniodoma polyedricum, characteristics of the... |

Samples were collected monthly at four fixed stations in Mida creek from May 1996 to April 1997, in order to determine the species composition, abundance and diversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton collected with 20- and 332-mm mesh size plankton nets respectively. Sampling also included measurement of salinity and temperature. Peaks in phytoplankton abundance occurred in May and January, following the long rains in April–May and the short rains in November–December. Zooplankton densities followed the phytoplankton peaks with the main peak occurring in February after the major phytoplankton bloom. Similarly, smaller peaks occurred in May and March. Copepods dominated the zooplankton forming up to 60% of total species composition. High zooplankton... |

The phytoplankton of the Kars River was studied from May to October 2005 at five sampling stations. Sixty-six phytoplankton taxa were determined, consisting of Cyanophyta (9), Chlorophyta (25), Euglenophyta (18), Bacillariophyta (7), Cryptophyta (3), Dinophyta (1) and Chrysophyta (3). Total phytoplankton density increased from May to July and then decreased until October. The dominant phytoplankton group was Cyanophyta (36.5 - 64.4%) for most of the study period, followed by Bacillariophyta (20.4 - 38.7%) and Chlorophyta (20.9 - 28.9%). Temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen ranged from 9.6 °C to 21.6 °C; 7.6 to 8.0, and 5.9 to 7.4 mg/L, respectively. Chlorophyl a level changed from 0.0025 to 0.0059 mg/L. On the other hand, both phosphate and nitrogen levels... |
